Comments on a Flickr account give insight on what Futura 2000 thinks about Michael Lau’s “Futura inspired” works.
User metaron1050’s pic of his MINDstyle edition all black Michael Lau Gardener figures, “Womax” and “Future”.

Futura posts as “FUTURADOSMIL” on Flickr
as OBI-WAN KENOBI once said:
NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG.
are you serious? these are HORRIBLE. don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the work of MICHAEL LAU and the VISUAL world he has created. but this is INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY that MR. LAU has STOLEN.
we have NEVER worked together on any projects and I have NEVER consented to; nor appreciated the FUTURAESQUE figures he has previously created. those PRODUCTS have been completely UNORIGINAL.
on many levels I couldn’t care LESS about any of this. or what MR. LAU does. I am however angered by the fact that my name is associated with this PROJECT.
let me break it down; so all the hommies understand me. PLAGIARISM

I found this quite interesting. Considering that the graffiti/art/streetwear/designer toy community associations are narrowly separated, I’m surprised that Futura and Michael Lau never worked this out.
What is interesting also, is that these figures from Michael Lau, also have Maharishi versions. (orange and olive drab colorway.) And they are released in collab with Maharishi.
Hardy Blechman, the founder of Maharishi, and Michael Lau have a close friendship and collaborate frequently. Maharishi also has a clothing line with Futura, “FHI – Futura Heavy Industries”. You’d think that if Futura and Michael Lau both have a relationship with Maharishi, they’d be able to communicate with each other on this matter.
