UNIQLOCK NEW SEASON!!!

I forgot to check a few days ago, but there are new scenes and new color schemes in the UNIQLOCK.

My favorite is this girl. She’s been in all the other seasons. She’s also in a hot pink tee. Just my style.

Looks like there’s a new girl or two, and they’re dancing in the library. Some of the same routines, some new. They also include animated characters, and the FPM soundtrack varies a bit now.

I will probably sit and watch this for an hour when I get home tonight. I’m such a nerd.

UPDATE Looks like I spoke a bit too soon. I check back a few hrs later, and I notice more than a few new girls. There seems to be more to look forward to…

UNCOMMON RECORDS & DIGITAL MEDIA: PROGRESSIVE HIP HOP THROUGH PROGRESSIVE MEANS

Where would we be without the internet? My guess is we’d spend more time outside, exercising, and being productive. Who knows, maybe the youth of today would actually make an effort to contribute something to society (myself included). But seriously there are some of us who use the internet as a means to achieve legitimate communication; take this blog for example. I am not one of these people, but I certainly appreciate it. Uncommon Records established their Indy Hip Hop label in 2003 with the intention of creating a purely digital label that would thrive on accessibility much like the net itself. By doing so they would allow themselves the ability to reach everyone via the web without relying on distributors. Five years later it would appear as though they have achieved that.

Founded by The Presence (Nasa & Cirrus), Uncommon set out to produce a “niche sound” comprised of progressive Hip Hop artists and releases which they strategically select. The purpose of using digital media is that it bypasses incredibly high manufacturing costs and cuts out the distributor allowing Uncommon to create and distribute their music freely. But the digital mentality not only pertains to distribution and manufacturing, its also a matter of promotion and advancement. Uncommon Records is taking advantage of the technology at their disposal and utilizing it to further their potential as a label and as artists. They also incorporate the use of blogs, websites, internet & satellite radio, and whatever technology is within reach. Uncommon Records is certainly not the first label to harness the power of communication technology, but they do a damn good job of it and they do it in a way which, I agree, is progressive.

I mention this not only because I really dig what Uncommon is doing and am an avid enthusiast, but more so because it has a direct correlation to what my man NOIS is doing. People can promote themselves without having to rely so much on the support of others these days thanks to the development of technology such as the internet and satellite radio. But don’t get me wrong. Just because you design a website, create a blog, a radio show, and get your name out there doesn’t mean your shit is worthy of praise and attention. You’ve got to do it right. You’ve got to have knowledge and integrity and maintain a level of creativity that is innovative. I believe Uncommon Records does just that. Their digital mentality benefits us all. They get to produce the best Hip Hop possible at a fraction of the cost and we get to enjoy it at a fraction of the cost, or in the case of internet and radio, at no cost.

I know when it comes to Indy Hip Hop, and in particular progressive music, one of the first names that comes to mind for a lot of you is Definitive Jux. No shit Sherlock. Def Jux has been around, gets a lot more publicity, has a bigger budget, and has the luxury of being associated with a name and face millions of fans are familiar with, El-Producto of the infamous Company Flow. Not to mention their crew of at least a dozen well known artists who’ve been doing their thing. Uncommon Records is NOT just another Def Jux. AND lets not forget that the man behind the scenes, mixing and engineering a lot of Def Jux records and even the Funcrusher Plus album circa El-P’s Rawkus days is none other than the co-founder of Uncommon, Nasa. Also several of Uncommon’s artists have pressed up singles, collabo’ed with, and performed shows with Def Jux. So when you give Uncommon Records a listen and think to yourself “this sounds similar to Def Jux” remember your history. And if you don’t believe me do some research you fucking goonie.

VERDICT: Uncommon Records is ILL and their sound is their own. I also dig their mantra.

UNCOMMON RECORDS ARTISTS INCLUDE:

The Presence (Nasa & Cirrus), Arcsin, Centri, Dig Dug, Karniege, Masai Bey, Short Fuze, Short Rock

Yeah, didn’t they already have a NY store?

If you’ve been to that location, you’d know it was tiny as fuck.

I’m assuming this new spot (a few doors down from the old spot) will be much more accommodating for designer toys and clothing.

There will be T-shirt giveaways and a Limited toy release and signing by East3.

Starting at 5:30pm there will be a live video cast of the opening on their site.

ふざけんな! …um, thats unfortunate. While other BEAMS labels were Japan only orders, BEAMS T offered excellent designs and collaborated with great designers, AND shipped internationally. Japanese web stores tend to not ship out of the country, but BEAMS T was one of the exceptions. 2 steps forward, 2 steps back I guess. :(

Glad I picked up the BEAMS T x FUTURA logo shirt and the BEAMS T x EVANGELION shirts when they still offered 3000円 international shipping.

Interview: Hardy Blechman of Maharishi

My close friends know that my taste for high-end street wear fashion was largely influenced when my cousin in London bought me a pair of heavily embroidered Maharishi Snopants back in 2001. Since then Hardy Blechman’s line, as well as his second line MHI have been a staple in my attire and accessories.

Nobody does DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material aka Camouflage) better than Maharishi, in fact, Hardy Blechman even put out an amazing book (Titled “DPM”) about the use of camouflage in military and fashion (which I own of course). Needless to say, Hardy Blechman has influenced my fashion tastes heavily, and I can easily say he’s my biggest fashion hero.

JC Report has a great interview with Hardy Blechman, talking about Maharishi’s start, use of sustainable materials, current trends in streetwear and the development of the Snopant. A decent read in my opinion.

Weekend is here! I was going to go to the Fair Oaks Apple Store’s grand opening to snag a T-shirt, but slept late. Might try to make it there now, but I’m sure free T-shirts are gone already. Still want to check it out.

Also this blog is 2 weeks old! I wanted to take an opportunity to thank my other contributors:

and last but not least “m4np” for giving us a bit of West Coast and female perspective, this place was feeling a bit too much like a sausage party. :) Looking forward to seeing what else they may contribute to this modest blog.

Fashion Confessions: Number One

Sometimes I like to dress up like a little girl.

By that I mean that recently I have been very intrigued by the “Lolita” Fashion Scene. Home made and ‘Brand’ name, Lolita fashion has many styles but it all kinda boils down to one thing- Playing dress up on a daily basis.

Kind of for fun and kind of to test myself (I sew and go to Fashion School for fashion design), I made the dress pictured above. I can honestly say I understand why girls will pay butt loads of money to have some Brand name dress shipped to them from Japan. For some reason, dressing up like this is kind of a catharsis for girls who’s parents didn’t indulge them through their ‘princess phase’. All in all, dressing up and taking pretty pictures in my fluffy dress was a ton of fun.

But don’t get me wrong, you probably won’t find me wearing this around town. That’s why this a Fashion Confession.

DCist: Overheard in D.C.

The good people at DCist were gracious enough to post a conversation that I overheard and submitted to their weekly piece “Overheard in D.C.”

My brother and I just finished eating and we heard this douchebag on his cell phone. It was so damn hard to keep from laughing, which we refrained from until he went back into the mall.

Check DCist to read it, it’s listed under “It’s a classy establishment”.
